The heavenly peace Jesus shared with his friends was shattered and we could say “all hell broke loose” as soldiers, priests and Judas Iscariot, the disciple who betrayed him, came to the garden. Arrest, chaos and Peter’s denial of even knowing Jesus followed on. More readings from John’s gospel, chapters 18 and 19 can help us understand what happened next.
Readings: John 18.1-14, 28-32; John 19.1-7; 16-20; 28-30; 38-42.
Collects for Good Friday.
look with mercy on this your family
for which our Lord Jesus Christ was content to be betrayed
and given up into the hands of sinners
and to suffer death upon the cross;
who is alive and glorified with you and the Holy Spirit,
one God, now and for ever.
in the cross of Jesus
we see the cost of sin
and the depth of your love:
in humble hope and fear
may we place at his feet
all that we have and all that we are,
through Jesus Christ our Lord.
